Krave Beauty and Repairing Your Skin Barrier

Krave Beauty and Repairing Your Skin Barrier

Hi all! Hope you’re all safe and healthy right now. I’ve been less active, but readjusting my schedule to online classes and overindulging in self-care has left me being neglectful of frequent posting.

A couple of weeks ago, my skin was a WRECK. Stress breakouts, a mysterious rash on my forehead consisting of about a thousand tiny bumps, and a botched self-dermaplane session (PLEASE don’t do that you guys— I’m not kidding) left my skin raw, flaking, and the worst I’ve seen it in years. I was freaking out— mostly about the global pandemic though lol— about how I was going to leave this psuedo-quarentine with my skin worse off; my skin picked at and my ego bruised. I had to act fast.

I had seen Krave Beauty’s products essentially everywhere on skincare social media— the clean beauty brand with “barrier reparing products” that nobody could stop talking about. I was hesitant due to the price tag before, but with no hope left and my last paycheck before my job closed due to corona worries, I took the chance.

The question is, what is my “skin barrier”? How can it be damaged? And most importantly— how can I repair it? According to a blog post on Krave Beauty’s website, the skin barrier is “the outermost layer of your skin that has a natural, protective barrier that when healthy keeps it safe from trans-epidermal water loss and potential irritants and allergens from getting into your skin, which can cause a variety of dermatological issues, like acne, dryness, chronic inflammation and overall sensitivity”. To put it simply, it’s the thing that keeps moisture in and protects your skin from not only the previous skin conditions mentioned, but outside factors like UVs, pollution, and other free radicals. To quote Dr. Sam Bunting in a Get the Gloss article, “On a more superficial note, it’s the bit that we see, so it’s very important from a cosmetic point of view”.The skin barrier can be damaged by a lot of things— in my case, over-exfoliation with chemical exfoliants, overuse of retinol, and physically sloughing off too many layers of skin in the previously-mentioned dermaplaning incident. It can also occur with overcleansing and using too many products at once— or using things that shouldn’t be used together.

Lucky for me, this is Krave Beauty’s specialty. With a limited product line, they focus on nourishment, moisture, and healing the skin barrier. Founded by a beauty influencer named Liah Yoo, she felt that there was too much confusion in the skincare industry and wanted to go back to basics, ones that actually do good for your skin. If I love anything, it’s a brand that has a founder with a face (think Glossier!) with specific ideas and the want to shake things up and bring something new to the table. Here’s my review!

Krave Beauty Matcha Kemp Hydrating Cleanser: An antioxidant cleanser made to repair the skin’s barrier (yes, you’re gonna hear that phrase many more times before this is over) with the ability to cleanse/lift dirty while hydrating the skin and leaving it with a healthy ph. Using matcha, hemp, vitamin b5 (and many more) it’s a powerhouse in terms of getting skin back on track. I LOVE this stuff— I also loved my Khiel’s cleanser, but Krave Beauty is vegan and cruelty-free (yay!) so I feel like it does better by my skin AND everyone else. Win-win! While the cleanser is “formulated without fragrence” it does kind of have a….weird smell? Then again, it’s not strong at all and considering the ingredients used, I’m not mad. It leaves my skin clean without feeling stripped— it makes a beautiful, light lather. I’m obsessed. Find it here
Krave Beauty Great Barrier Relief: First off, I love the name— so cute. According to Krave’s website, this serum is for “Someone who needs to press reset on their irritated skin”. Made with a mixture of soothing oils like rosehip seed, tamanu, and squaline, the heavy-duty serum is the key to healing skin. This stuff is...crazy good. More expensive than I would typically spend on a serum, but it’s so worth it. The rash on my forehead is gone, my raw and scabbing nose is smooth and soothed, and my skin is definitely more even and moisturized. I’ve been using one to two pumps every morning and night, and I’ve noticed a huge difference— not only has it helped with most of the problems I was dealing with, it made my skin look better than it did BEFORE my skin flipped her sh*t. Incredible. My only complaint is that I didn’t buy it before. I would reccomed to chill out on everything though when using this— simplify your routiene. No chemical exfoliants or masks, use only one other serum at most when using, keep it simple. Find it here

Overrall, these are awesome, clean products that I’ve seen direct results from. I don’t think I could ask for more from these. In these trying times… stay home if you can (if you’re an essential worker, God bless you), wash your face, and WASH YOUR HANDS!!! Stay safe my lovelies. Self-care and care for those around you <3
