Why Vitamin C Serums are That Girl

Why Vitamin C Serums are That Girl

Vitamin C is commonly used in skincare, especially serums. But what does this ingredient actually do? How does it help the skin? According to a dermotologist interviewed by Allure, it is “a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals”. The article also mentions that the antioxidants fight off free radicals (unstable atoms that cause illness and aging), helping to produce collagen, correct uneven textures wrinkles, and sun damage— and brightens the skin. It’s a bit of a powerhouse, if you couldn’t tell.
In terms of application, that’s where things get a bit tricky. The general consensus seems to be that wearing Vitamin C during the day is the best way to go, considering that it fights sun damage. But it ALSO makes the skin more sensitive to the sun so piling on SPF afterwards is a must. I feel like I’m the only person who wears it at night, but another Allure article validated me— wearing vitamin C at night helps the skin prepare for the sun the next day… so I guess both?? Either?? Or?? It’s up to you kid— whatever is best for you and your skin.
My favorite way to apply Vitamin C is with a serum at night, inbetween my hylauronic acid serum and moisturizer. I’ve only ever used 2, because it’s not a product I really feel is worth exploring at this time.
I love Glossier’s Super Glow, a Vitamin C + Magnesium serum. A super lightweight, non-sticky formula leaves the skin with a healthy, lit-from within glow. I used this during the day on the high points of my face (Oh, the days before Glossier Futuredew) and did see a significant difference. NOTE: I used this over a year ago, so I believe the formula has changed— I know the bottle size has— but I have only read great things. Find it here
Mary Kay’s TimeWise Replenishing Serum + Vitamin C is my current favorite. I use it at night— given it’s replenishing properties. Vitamin C isn’t the focus, but rather the guest star in a antioxidant-packed show. Creamy, smooth, and glides on like a dream. Essentially on the other side of the spectrum to Super Glow. Find it here
Before, I just thought Vitamin C was a skincare buzzword that didn’t do much— boy was I wrong. Vitamin C serums have become an integral part of my routiene, and I don’t see it going anywhere in the near future.
