Why Facial Mists are more important than you think– and how to get the best use of them

Why Facial Mists are more important than you think– and how to get the best use of them

From the perspective of a beginner in skincare, facial mists seem a bit foolish. Paying over $7 for a glorified spritz bottle of rose water or spring water, from some place in France? (Looking at you, Evian) It just seems silly. To be honest, they seem a bit silly to me too. Except, they’ve become one of the most crucial parts of my routine, from morning to night.

Gonnna go on a bit on a tangent here— just wanted to implore the public to PLEASE STOP USING MARIO BADESCU’S ROSEWATER SPRAYS!!!!! STOP IT!!!!! Literally use any other rosewater— make your own! Their sprays have a lot of ingredients— including fragrance. Most rosewater sprays should just be rosewater. I can’t speak for the rest of Mr. Badescu’s line, but don’t let skincare twitter trick you into buying a rose perfume for your face.

Personally, I stand by Heritage Store’s Rosewater & Glycerin spray. There’s 3 ingredients- Purified Water, Vegetable Glycerin, and Hydroessential Rose. It’s the move, I’m not even going to front. I’ve been using it since 8th grade— a staple of my skincare routine before I even knew what a skincare routine was.

For water sprays… It’s a little difficult for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love them. It’s just kind of hard to justify buying a can of water for my skin that’s 3 times the price (or more!) of  a bottle that I would drink in order to, you know, not die. But, one must put rationality to the side for a glowing complexion. I’ve tried some different kinds, but I’d have to say my favorite is La Roche-Posay’s Thermal Spring Water spray. Made for sensitive skin it “Soothes and protects” according to the bottle. I initially found it in an Italian Pharmacy. I was sad to return home and have the bottle run out, until I found out that they now sell the brand at CVS!

Now for the uses. I actually had to figure this out the hard way. For about 2 years, I would mist rosewater on my face after finishing my routine. One day, I accidentally sprayed my rosewater BEFORE my moisturizer. (This was before I was a fiend for hyaluronic acid serum) Too lazy to wait for my damp face to dry, I applied my moisturizer. Lo and behold, I found the way. My moisturizer seemed to soak in better, and my face wasn’t ridiculously slick.

Down the road, I learned about WHY this happens. Basically, products with hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, so applying it on dry skin basically makes it useless (well not useless, but def not as effective as it could be.) It can’t hold water moisture if there isn’t any water to hold on to! I’m not a dermo, so I don’t know if this applies to other products, but I can see (and feel) a difference in moisture when I use a mist. Get your money’s worth out of those moisturizers, Honey!

So, what’s the moral of this story? Buy the expensive water. You’ll (and your skin) will thank me later.
