Review: Glossier Play
THE PLAYGROUND
When Glossier started posting those mysterious, colorful posts a few months back, I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t even think. As a Glossier-crazed makeup/skincare fanatic, I would literally buy anything they put out. I just hoped it would be worth the hype.
As usual, they didn’t disappoint. Glossier Play, a fun upgrade to Glossier’s simple, everyday makeup. I got the Playground, which includes one of each makeup item in the collection.
Let me break down the collection:
Glitter Gelée: a glitter gel. Pretty much explains itself. Comes in 4 shades.
Colorslide: A smooth, easily blendable eye pencil. Comes in 14 shades.
Vinylic Lip: A glossy lip lacquer with a punch of color- can be worn sheer, if that’s what you’re into. Comes in 6 shades.
Niteshine: A liquid highlighter- Glossier’s answer to those who want more of a glow than their first highlighter, Haloscope, could provide. Comes in 4 shades.
The Detailer: A “silicone multi-tool”. I assume it’s for the Glitter Gelée, which is what I use it for.
Blade: A sharpener for the Colorslide pencils.
The Glitter Gelée is really fun. I’m not usually a glitter wearer- but I loved how it could be made into a subtle look with the Detailer. I put it on the inner corner for a more extra version of a highlight in the inner corner, which did make my eyes itch a bit. Not like an allergic itch, but more like an, I’m stupid and basically put glitter into my tear duct itch— that one is on me, folks. I got the shade Glass Bonsai, a fun green-gold-blue glitter that really attracted me. I’ve never seen a shade like it— or maybe I just need to look at the trending sequin colors this season (lol).
I got 3 Colorslide shades. Hardcore velvet- a dark teal. Disaster Class- a rich burgundy. Brack- a nice brown-black. For someone with dark brows (like myself), it can be used as an eyebrow pencil in a pinch. The colors are really smooth and super blendable. Do it fast though- when it's on, it STAYS on. The initial swatch took 2 days to come off. It’s an eye pencil; not much to write about. I don’t know if the formula is that unique, but all the colors are FANTASTIC, both unique and bright.
For the Vinylic Lip, I got the shade Disco, a reddish-orangish color, reminiscent of Virginia clay. It’s one of those pen applicators that you have to click, which is kind of a hassle, but it’s worth it when you get the product out. As much pigment as a lipstick, with a really nice sheen and texture. To be quite honest, I feel like there are other products like it on the market, but still a great product
nonetheless.
Niteshine, a liquid highlighter with a really nice sheen. I got the shade pale pearl- a pinky-champangy(?) color, with a really nice shimmer. It looks AMAZING on the inner corner of the eye- something I really struggle to find with other liquid highlights. The bottle is pretty small, but you only need a dot for the whole cheekbone- a lot of bang for your buck. Also, a pretty nice doe foot applicator.
Now for the tools. This is why I love Glossier. They. Think. Of. EVERYTHING!
The Detailer is perfect for applying the glitter, so you don’t have to get it all over your hands. The thin tip makes it easy to apply, even a glitter wing (I have not tried this myself, but I’ve seen enough pictures by more talented people to know it’s possible).
The Blade is what really got me going. According to Glossier’s website, the sharpener is “German engineered”. Upon opening up the sharpener, I found a strange, waxy little stick. I literally could not figure out what it was supposed to do. After about 10 minutes of pondering, I realized: it's a CLEANER. You use it in between each sharpening so you don’t get the last pencil’s color on the current. Genius. Emily Weiss owns me now, there’s no going back, I’m sorry.
Overall, I really enjoyed the new collection. My single complaint: there’s really cute and colorful plastic wrappers covering each product under the boxes. It feels a bit wasteful to me, and if you’re someone who is trying to use less plastic, you might want to wait and see if they change the packaging.
ALSO, Here’s a 10% Glossier code to reward you for reading this whole article. Have fun!
